Mentoring at Cornell

Within SLEN, Mentoring at Cornell is a community of practice that convenes two-three times each semester. This sub-group of SLEN was launched in April 2021. All are welcome to participate in these informal conversations, and to support the planning of these conversations.

Here is the Canvas page for this group, which has resources and more.

Past Convenings

February 2022: Mentorship – In Service to Self and Others
Facilitated by Tracey Brant, Cornell Office of the University Ombudsman, Suzanne Wapner and Colleen Kearns, Environment & Sustainability Program. We will offer attendees a restorative space in which to 1) reflect on their identity as mentors and human beings and 2) to facilitate an open-hearted discussion.

December 2021: Moving the Dial – One Thing that Could Strengthen Your Mentoring Program
We’ll discuss mentoring challenges with the goal of identifying one action we can each take to “move the dial” toward easing the challenge in some way. At the end of the meeting, we’ll share a peer mentoring handbook and invite those of you with handbooks or other training materials to share them at a future meeting.
Note that we use the term “mentoring program” in the most general sense and “mentoring program” could refer to an actual program or any number of alternatives including clubs, courses, structures, and more.
Thank you to Wayva Lyons, Allison Barrett, and Marcia Eames-Sheavly for convening us

October 2021: Mentoring in Times of Uncertainty – Supporting Students & Each Other
Facilitated by Laura Schoenle and Nadine Porter
Join us for an informal discussion of mentoring during challenging and uncertain times. We will discuss the challenges both we and our students are facing as we manage our mentoring programs this semester and the changes we’ve made to adapt to the current environment. We will work together to identify ways we can make mentoring and utilizing resources easier (yet still effective) for ourselves and our students. Note that we use the term “mentoring program” in the most general sense and mentoring program could refer to an actual program or any number of alternatives including clubs, courses, structures, and more.
